Matt Weidner on WUSF Florida Matters: Foreclosure Pressures Grow on Florida Homeowners

On October 12, 2026, I joined WUSF’s Florida Matters Live & Local with host Matthew Peddie to talk about what is happening to Florida homeowners right now. The episode, “Foreclosure pressures grow on homeowners, and the big debate over four vaccines,” opens with the foreclosure segment.

The starting point is simple: for a lot of Florida homeowners, the math of a mortgage doesn’t add up the way it used to. According to ATTOM data cited in the program, Florida ranks among the states with the highest foreclosure rates, with nearly 230,000 homeowners facing foreclosure through June. Rising insurance premiums, property taxes and everyday expenses are squeezing household budgets.

What we covered

I appeared alongside Aidza Antonio Thomas, executive director of Solita’s House, a housing nonprofit. The conversation, with calls from listeners sharing their own stories and questions, focused on three things:

  • What is driving the foreclosure trend in Florida
  • The options available to homeowners who are struggling
  • How to recognize scams that target people looking for help

If you are behind on your mortgage

Act early. Many of the options discussed in the program narrow once a foreclosure lawsuit is filed, and the deadline to respond to a complaint is short. If you have been served, do not ignore it. Call my office to talk through your situation.
