Foreclosure filing fees are not just the lifeblood of our courts, they are the only blood left in the decimated corpse that is our court’s funding. A fair, open and properly funded court system is a pillar of our democracy and an absolute requirement of state and federal Constitutions, but our courts have been de-funded to the point where any argument can be made that we have a properly functioning legal system. “The court is running out of money,” said Lee Haworth, chief justice for Florida’s 12th Circuit Court. “Ninety percent of the funding for this year’s budget came from foreclosure filing fees and the drop-off has left us with a zero balance.”
